ORKEST makes the most of power grids
The limits of grid capacity
The energy transition is increasing pressure on medium-voltage networks, resulting in more and more places in grid congestion. Grid operators are therefore investing heavily in expanding network capacity, but this process will take a lot of time. The ORKEST project consortium is pushing the boundaries and researching whether better use can be made of the capacity of the existing medium-voltage networks. The project, which was recently launched, will have a strongly scientific focus. In close cooperation with Stedin, DNV, Netbeheer Nederland and Eindhoven University of Technology, Technolution Spark and Phase to Phase will be translating the research results into practical applications within ORKEST.
Increasing grid load and active capacity management
There is very little practical experience in the Netherlands with long-term 100% grid load. This means we do not at present understand the impact of high loads on reliability. At the same time, active capacity management is applied only to a very limited degree. ORKEST is seeking to encourage the safe optimization of grid capacity and the development and application of capacity management.
“Together with the other ORKEST members, we are looking at how we can better employ unused capacity at the right moments, of course fully within the applicable safety margins. This is why we need to collect reliable data and adequate tools.”
Analysis of congested networks
The ORKEST project partners will be examining many different aspects of energy supply, including business operation, supply security, asset management (including obsolescence of cables and parts) and active grid management through soft switching. In addition, the consortium is working to produce reliable models and software. Insight can be generated by thorough analysis of the data of various existing electricity grids where solar and wind energy feed-in is leading to congestion.
Tools for business operation and network planning
Within the consortium, Technolution Spark and Phase to Phase are developing software and OT systems for business operation and network planning. We are basing these tools and systems on models for reliability and obsolescence that DNV is developing. They can be used to determine the available grid capacity even more accurately and to make operational use of this information.
Dynamic optimization
Ultimately, we are working with the ORKEST consortium towards the smart and dynamic use of assets in the grid. For example by getting solar parks to diminish their power temporarily rather than switching off completely, as is often the case today. If we are able to make optimal use of the existing grid capacity, this will help society to benefit optimally from the advantages of the energy transition.
About ORKEST
ORKEST is an initiative of Stedin, Technolution, Phase to Phase, DNV, Netbeheer Nederland and Eindhoven University of Technology. The project was recently launched and will run for 4 years. The project is co-funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy and Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations. ORKEST is covered by the central government’s Mission-Driven Research, Development and Innovation (MOOI in Dutch) scheme
