Energy management for more efficient energy use at Afvalzorg Nauerna

Charging electric vehicles require a lot of power. At Afvalzorg Nauerna in Assendelft, a waste management company, charging vehicles even caused overruns of the contractual transport capacity agreed with the grid operator. As a result, Afvalzorg had to switch off the charging stations in its carpark, because its electrical installations for waste disposal and landfill management of course had higher priority. Together with Firan, a specialist in new energy infrastructure, we realized an energy management solution for this problem, and now staff at Afvalzorg Nauerna can once again charge their cars in the carpark as before.

Charging at maximum achievable speed

The energy management system we developed allows the charging stations to be operated dynamically. Thanks to the system, the charging stations charge at the maximum achievable speed, without overrunning the maximum capacity of the grid connection. This ensures the installations at Afvalzorg Nauerna always have the power they need. Now that the energy management system is up and running, there is always enough residual capacity to charge connected electric vehicle during the day.

Analysis and coordination through energy management

The energy management system reads out the meter on the Afvalzorg Nauerna grid connection. Then it calculates the available space, factoring in a configurable safety margin. This capacity is then made available to the charging stations.

This energy management system is scalable. It is possible, for example, to connect a wind or solar park and to include sustainable solar energy in the analysis and distribution of power. Moreover, the system was designed to allow easy connection with other devices, such as battery energy storage. Connections with other companies are also possible, for instance to create an energy hub platform for electricity sharing between companies in a business park. This makes the energy management system flexible and suitable for many different types of situations.

Strategic partnership with Firan

Technolution Spark developed the energy management system for Afvalzorg Nauerna in close partnership with Firan. Technolution and Firan are working together to support companies and organizations in the energy transition. Firan is working on innovative local energy networks that create space for the sustainable growth of enterprises, business parks, and industrial estates; Technolution develops the required technological solutions.

“We support Firan’s activities with advanced technology, for instance for energy management. Our strength is realizing pragmatic, working solutions for complex problems, and integrating all the various systems that are involved.”
