Technolution modernizes traffic light control systems for City of Stockholm

Press release

Stockholm is taking big steps in the realization of its ambitious Smart and Connected City program. For the subprogram Smart Traffic Management the city will modernize its traffic light control centers and roadside technology. Dutch-based tech company and mobility expert Technolution Move has been selected to carry out this project. They will implement the Nordic RSMP for communication with roadside systems. For overall management of traffic lights and other roadside systems in Stockholm, Technolution Move’s traffic management platform MobiMaestro will be used.

ICT-driven traffic management

In order to unlock the potential of modern, ICT-driven traffic management, the City of Stockholm requires state-of-the-art control technology for the 500+ traffic lights in the city. The city currently has two traffic light control (TLC) management systems which are at the end of their life cycles. Furthermore, the data from these systems cannot be shared with other parties or systems. For these reasons, the city is bringing all traffic controllers together under one communication protocol and one management system.

To manage the city’s traffic light controllers (TLCs), Stockholm’s traffic systems will be replaced with MobiMaestro, Technolution Move’s modular and scalable traffic management platform. The open and vendor-independent Roadside Messaging Protocol (RSMP) will be used for communication with the TLCs and other roadside equipment. RSMP was developed in the Nordics and offers a lot of opportunities for new features and further development. The combination of MobiMaestro and RSMP has already been tried and tested in Copenhagen. MobiMaestro also provides support for other RSMP equipment, such as variable message signs, radars and counting stations.

“Winning such a prestigious project in Sweden shows that MobiMaestro is in line with road operators’ ambitions for an open and modular traffic management system that is sustainable over time. Our ambition with this project is to help the City of Stockholm achieve their goal of a smart and connected city and at the same time to reduce environmental emissions through better traffic flow.”

Improving traffic flow and reducing environmental impact

Wojciech Goj, head of Traffic Planning-Technology of the City of Stockholm, says: “City of Stockholm aims to become the world’s most innovative and connected city by 2040, and introducing a smart and connected traffic management system is no exception from this goal. Being able to use new data sources and more advanced traffic scenario management will bring us a brand new toolbox to further improve traffic flow, and to further reduce environmental impact caused by the transport sector. We look forward in cooperating with Technolution on the establishment of MobiMaestro, which we are convinced will bring several future benefits to our citizens and road users.”
