Technolution Move to develop traffic signal prioritization for Region Stockholm

Technolution Move has been selected by Region Stockholm in the Swedish province Stockholm County to develop, implement and support a new traffic signal priority system for buses. The system will improve public transport planning and punctuality, making public transport more attractive and stimulating its use. It will be data-driven, allowing for greater flexibility in traffic management, as well as better connectivity for new traffic signals, traffic management systems and operators. The contract is for five years, with two possible extensions of two years.
No technical modifications to buses or traffic signals
The traffic signal prioritization service will deliver and retrieve information to and from different systems, vehicles and receivers. But as it will use existing communication protocols, the new service requires no technical modifications to buses or traffic signal controllers. The data collected from buses and traffic signals will be processed by a traffic management system, which decides which vehicles need priority. Road authorities receive priority requests from the system, allowing them to act on these in the traffic signal systems, for instance by giving the priority vehicle a green light. This last step can also be automated in the future.
Smoother and faster bus trips
There are many stakeholders in this project in Stockholm County, such as four different bus operators and 27 road owners. Today, just eight of these road owners have intersections with active traffic signal prioritization, about 200 intersections in total. The new service will allow for a significant expansion of the number of intersections with bus priority, so that a lot more travelers can enjoy smoother, faster bus trips. All road authorities, traffic operators and Region Stockholm will be able to operate the user interfaces of the service to optimize the prioritization function.
