Traffic Management with MobiMaestro in Rotterdam
At the beginning of the century, the City of Rotterdam introduced a parking guidance system with targeted traffic guidance; Technolution developed the software. Together with Rotterdam, we took the first steps towards advanced, data-driven traffic management. Ultimately this resulted in MobiMaestro, our traffic management platform.
Automatic scenarios for major events
Today, MobiMaestro forms the digital, traffic engineering heart of the Rotterdam control room. Traffic engineers and traffic operators work there to streamline the city’s heavy traffic. In addition to day-to-day traffic management, traffic operators also ensure smooth traffic flow in case of major events in the city, such as the Rotterdam Marathon, the North Sea Jazz festival, and the World Port Days. Just like international matches in the De Kuip stadium or a Feijenoord championship, these events can have a major impact on traffic in the city.
Modules in MobiMaestro
Event organizers are required to submit a traffic plan beforehand. Traffic engineers then translate this traffic plan into a fully automated scenario in MobiMaestro. A scenario for example modifies the regulation of traffic light controllers using the MobiMaestro module VINCE, displays diversion information on digital route information panels (DRIPs) using the DISPLAY module, and puts parking guidance in place using the PAGE module. Prior to the event, an automatic calendar function or a traffic operator deploys the scenario at the press of a button. Scenarios can normally be reused without limit.
Safe passage through the Maastunnel
The architecture of MobiMaestro also underlies Adaptive Flow Management (AFM). This system ensures that traffic in the Rotterdam Maastunnel is always in motion at at least 15 km/h. This requirement is derived from the speed with which tunnel ventilators are able to extract smoke from the tunnel during an incident. AFM doses traffic on the access and exit routes of the tunnel, so that traffic in the tunnel always attains the required speed.
