Dynamic traffic management in Maastricht: responding to evolving traffic situations

Whenever the shops in Germany or Belgium are closed on a national holiday, the numbers of visitors to Maastricht jumps. The city tries to manage the intensive traffic using parking guidance and access regulation measures controlled through MobiMaestro. All this happens either fully automatically, or at the simple press of a button.

Traffic control scenarios in MobiMaestro

Traffic control scenarios in MobiMaestro have a fixed set of configurations for traffic lights, dynamic route panels and other connected roadside devices. The road manager can activate a scenario simply by pressing a button. Scenarios are particularly suitable for recurring situations, such as festivals, sports matches and other events.

Scenarios for busy days

On busy days, many additional visitors from Germany and/or Belgium come to Maastricht. The city uses the traffic control scenarios provided by the MobiMaestro module NEMO. On normal days, standard scenarios are in place that focus on managing regular commuter traffic. On busy days, a different set of scenarios is activated. They ensure guidance for heavier traffic and focus on vehicles looking for parking.

Automatic guidance to free parking places

The parking guidance system, built from the MobiMaestro modules PAGE and DISPLAY, monitors the occupancy of parking garages in and around the center of Maastricht. Once a garage is full, MobiMaestro automatically adjusts the dynamic parking guidance system in the city. Traffic looking for parking is then guided to free parking places instead

Regulation at access points to the city

If long queues form before parking garages, MobiMaestro’s VINCE module adjusts the operation of traffic lights at access points at the edge of the city. Countdown timers beside the traffic lights inform road users when they can expect the next green light.

User-friendly platform for complex traffic management

Maastricht, the province of Limburg, and cities such as Sittard-Geleen and Heerlen are using MobiMaestro for wide-ranging, dynamic traffic management. MobiMaestro continues to be a user-friendly platform for this even as complexity is growing.

In the video below, Toby Leurs, Dynamic Traffic Management policy officer at the City of Maastricht, talks about his experiences with MobiMaestro.
