Eelco’s story
Growth and development
“The good thing about software development is: it’s creative, it’s like solving puzzles, and it involves building things. It’s Lego for adults. I do need variety, I can’t stay on any project for too long. In projects, I’m always the one dealing with the client, and this is why I was asked last year to help draft an offer. Afterwards, I worked on the resulting the project. It was a great experience. Technolution facilitates me and gives me space to try new things. Go and do it, that’s what they say.”
Team and atmosphere
“People here have strong expertise. I’ve always had people in my teams that I can ask things, that can point the way. The teamwork is great. In teams, I’m sometimes inclined just to say, okay, let’s get on with it. But the architect might say: let’s have another good look at it first. What I like is beginning a new project together and getting colleagues excited about it. Or have them talk to the client about it.”
Technology
“I have a degree in econometrics, and most colleagues here studied computer science. My background is a little different, but I love delving into new technology. I’m always learning about software and new tools, and have resigned myself to the fact that I don’t know everything yet. I’m gravitating towards business development, but don’t want to lose sight of the technological side of things either. I wouldn’t want to work only with PowerPoints or be a project leader. What I need is a balance between these things, and I think I’ve found it where I am at the moment.”

Are you ready for progress as a Software Engineer?
His project
“I mainly work on projects for the energy sector. I started a few years ago on a really large project, but currently I’m in something very small with only two other colleagues. My current project began as a kind of start-up and has gone through a number of stages. We’re now doing pilots and people are connecting their systems to our solution. What I really enjoy about these projects is the politics of them. Liaising with various parties, giving advice, and negotiating about functionalities, securing contracts.”
Impact on society
“We’re working on problems that you read about in the newspaper every day. Preventing congestion on the power grid. There are companies out there that are simply not getting energy contracts anymore. We’re building an application that controls the sharing of available energy. Useful technology that is urgently necessary. That’s what makes working for Technolution fun: we’re optimizing society.”
