Elmar’s story

Growth and development

“I’m not specialized in one specific thing. As soon as something is going smoothly, I start look further afield. I keep growing and my goals are growing with me. First it was technology, tools, a new communication bus. Now I want to grow towards becoming lead designer. I’m thinking about things like: how do I manage a team, how do I manage expectations, what can we technically do and what is the client asking us to do? I have a lot of freedom. Shaping my own learning goals, that’s my responsibility, but I have my coach to spar with.”

Team and atmosphere

“Every month I organize a Share-Your-Work session. Two colleagues come to tell us about their project. What challenges are they facing, what did they learn? It gives rise to discussions. This kind of commitment to the job is huge. Breaking things down into comprehensible bits helps you look at things from another person’s perspective, including that of the client. If I want to be able to persuade people of an idea, I have to be able to explain it. Everyone here is driven to understand things, where we’re heading, what the challenges are.”

Technology

“What new technology is relevant for us? Is it complex, challenging, and interesting enough for Technolution? Everything in electronics is currently getting faster and smaller. That means there is going to be more heat development on a small surface. So we have to do rigorous simulation and testing on this. I also work on mechanics. How do our electronics interact with the casing? How do we make sure that a product can be properly assembled? We’ve set up a mechanics knowledge group to study these kinds of questions.”

Are you ready for progress?

His project

“Electronics are often the critical phase of the project. You need the circuit board to develop the firmware and software, so choices have to be made at an early stage. I’m excited to be involved in this process. Does this really solve the client’s problem? Could we improve it further? Are there any other aspects to consider? To give one example: proper grounding of the system is crucial in highly sensitive measuring devices. I try to keep a broad view from the start of a project, so that I see things at system level that need to be factored in.”

Impact on society

“I want to contribute something constructive. The quality of my work is important, and that includes a reliable and sustainable product. So I also reflect on the development and production process. How can we do this so that we can reduce societal and environmental impact? I liaise with suppliers about this. What can we do to help them produce efficiently with relatively few outages? We don’t produce large volumes, so innovation is key. Keeping a broad perspective, looking at things such as producibility, maintainability… it’s not just about developing electronics. Our domain is wider than that.”
